Rutgers University Awarded 2023 Mark C. Garvey Scholarship

Herndon, VA; Oct. 31, 2023 – The PMMIFoundation, in collaboration with the Garvey Corporation, is proud to announcethat Rutgers University has been selected as the recipient of this year’s$5,000 Mark C. Garvey Scholarship. PMMI, The Association for Packaging andProcessing Technologies, demonstrates its steadfast commitment to supportingpackaging education at U.S. colleges, universities, and technical schoolsthrough the PMMI Foundation. 

“The Garvey family is pleased toaward the 2023 Mark C. Garvey Scholarship. I had the privilege to meet with theRutgers University Packaging Engineering faculty, tour their facility, and meetsome of the students. We would like to congratulate Rutgers for being selectedas the recipient,” says Jake Garvey, director of OEM sales, Garvey Corporation.

The Mark C. Garvey scholarship wasestablished by PMMI in memory of Mark Garvey, former president and CEO of theGarvey Corporation, past chairman of PMMI, and a long-standing advocate ofpackaging education. Each fall, the Garvey family selects one PMMI EducationPartner to receive this scholarship, based on its commitment to excellence inthe packaging industry. The chosen school then identifies a student for theaward, considering factors such as GPA, major, dedication to the packagingindustry, extracurricular involvement, and financial need.

“Sponsors like Garvey Corporationand PMMI play a pivotal role in enabling the Rutgers Packaging EngineeringProgram to provide high-quality education and opportunities for aspiringpackaging engineers,” says Magy Gergus, senior program coordinator, PackagingEngineering Program, Rutgers University. “This scholarship will empower atalented and motivated student to pursue their academic and professionalaspirations with reduced burden of financial stress. It is not just a financialgift; it serves as an inspiration that will drive the student to excel in theirstudies and make a positive contribution to the packaging industry in the yearsahead. We will be working to identify a deserving student who fulfills thecriteria set forth for this scholarship.”

The PMMI Foundation dedicates over$200,000 annually to educational scholarships for students pursuing studies inpackaging, food processing, engineering, and mechatronics.
